Great prospects of sewage sludge use in growing short rotation biomass plantations in case of Subotica Regional Landfill

Plants at the short rotation willow plantation at the Regional Landfill in Subotica reach over 1.5 meters in height only three months after the planting.

Sludge coming out of the wastewater treatment plant proves to be good soil base for the growth of the willow. The biomass that comes from short rotation willow plantation will be mixed with the sludge from the purifier, and it will be possible to use the sludge to treat some wild landfills, which still exist. Subotica regional landfill covers the territory of seven local governments, meaning the city of Subotica and six other municipalities in the territory of northern Vojvodina. Thus, it will be possible to use the composted sludge obtained in this way for the remediation of old and even wild landfills.
